I am a Gen X lawyer, powerlifter, music afficionado, veteran record collector, beginner guitar player, husband, and father (not in that order). I started writing short fiction in 1999, then took an extended break from 2002 until 2021, in which time I wasted my twenties partying in Chicago; got my JD from a Big Ten law school (summa cum laud for anyone keeping score); began my career with the prestigious, workaholic, and very evil law firm Wolfram & Hart*; got married and had two children; and nursed an ever increasing alcohol habit.
After my alcoholic father’s catastrophically declining health showed me the folly of my hard-drinking ways, I quit booze cold turkey: no detox, no support groups, and no AA. It was a good start, but without the stupefying effects of alcohol, I found myself facing down my mortality. How much time did I have left? What more did I want to accomplish? What had been left undone that I would regret when I came to my inevitable end?
Nobody can answer that first question. The second two were easier: to resume writing, to tell the stories I feel the need to tell. The stories that only I could tell, to the best of my limited ability.
I wrote a few stories and got positive reaction from my friends and family, but zero interest from any of the (many, far too many) literary magazines I sent them to.
So I decided to serialize and self-publish those stories, along with any thoughts I have about what I’ve been reading, the music I’ve been listening to, the ever-deteriorating rule of law in this country, my life as a competitive weightlifter, and anything else that comes to mind.
I value your (yes your – you, the person reading this blog) time and interest, and I welcome any comments you have. Have at it!
Anyhow, I hope you enjoy this all.
